Hydration Summit – Week 1…

Today marks the beginning of Week 2 of the Hydration Summit, a huge collaboration of 16 outdoor adventure writers discussing everything you ever wanted to know about hydration.  For those of you who have not visited the site yet, I thought I’d do a breakdown of some of the highlights of Week 1.

June 4th-

My first article hit the night before the summit went live because I wasn’t paying attention and didn’t schedule my publish date properly.  I crafted a full product comparison of the 4 top hydration reservoirs competing in the hydration system market today.  I focused on presenting the CamelBak Antidote, the GEIGERRIG, the Osprey/Nalgene Hydraform Reservoir and the Platypus Big Zip.  Each had their unique advantages.  Go check it out and let me know which reservoir design you prefer.

Paul posted his article comparing the nozzle designs of each system as well.  His review systematically focused on the Pros and Cons of each nozzle (bite valve) and illustrated the differences.  He also got feedback from other users so his article didn’t just present his opinion.  He compared the CamelBak, Osprey, GEIGERRIG, Outdoor Products, High Sierra and Platypus.

June 5th-

Katie presented a fascinating, and somewhat disturbing (Blowback!) article about techniques for creating water pressure in your hydration system in order to spray water from the bite valve.  She presented multiple techniques (some of which I have tried myself) but ultimately focused on the one true “pressurized system”, GEIGERRIG.  There are times when having the ability to spray water through your hydration tube is a very handy ability.

Hendrik gave us a nice little comparison review of 4 different hydration backpacks.  Not all packs are created equal and many are designed for specific activities, making them less versatile and more specialized.  Hendrik compared the Osprey Raptor 18, GEIGERRIG 1200, the GoRuck GR1 and the LAUFBURSCHE huckePACK and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of all of them.

June 6th-

Phil published an informative article explaining the dangers of cross-contamination when refilling your hydration system and how to avoid it.  He shows us the most common points of cross contamination are:

  • Dirty hands – Putting “dirty” hands in your mouth or eyes
  • Dirty nozzle – Contaminating your hydration system hose nozzle
  • Dirty reservoir – Putting “dirty” water into a clean hydration reservoir
  • Dirty hose – Touching a clean hose with a “dirty” one

June 7th-

Whitney‘s fantastic and informative article about hydrating in the backcountry gave us an introduction to what the potential threats are in backcountry water sources.  She then follows up with explaining proper treatment techniques to avoid drinking contaminated water and becoming ill.  She offers some great tips for being safe with your drinking water.

June 8th-

Jessica had an opportunity to interview virologist J. David Beckham, MD, Assistant Professor in the Infectious Diseases Division at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine about hydration issues during outdoor activities.  Her interview digs deeper in to the problems of contamination in backcountry water sources and the dangers of drinking untreated water.  At one point she asks Dr. Beckham, “Are you confident relying on an inline filtration system, being able to fill your pack from a stream and have it filter thru the line and be immediately potable? Why or why not?”  That is an important question and you should check out his answer.

We also had some great additions to “Stories from the Trail” where you guys get to tell us your real life hydration stories.

I kicked off Week 2 this morning with my newest article about how to deal with illness and dehydration in the backcountry.  The danger of having to deal with the problems associated with drinking contaminated water are low on smaller trips.  Most of the time, you will be back home and near medical help when you start to feel sick.  But on longer trips into the wilderness, it is entirely likely that you’ll have to deal with a serious bout of illness and dehydration is the most dangerous challenge you’ll face.  I discuss ways to deal with it.

Look for Ryan‘s article later this week about hydration supplements!

Beach Camping in Galveston: A Happy Disaster…

“…But, it’s so small.”

I had barely pulled it out.  We hadn’t even had a chance to get it up yet.

“Is it supposed to be this small?  It doesn’t look like it’s going to be big enough.”

Talk about a bad way to start what is supposed to be a fun, romantic Valentine’s Weekend trip.  Merelyn had to work on Valentine’s Day so we had planned to go camping on the beach near Galveston the weekend before Valentine’s Day.  I had grabbed a few things from home and brought them to Texas for the trip.  She’s moved around so much the last few years that she didn’t really know where any of her camping gear actually was.

Preparing for the trip back in Phoenix, I had gone through my shelves of gear and looked for stuff I could take to Texas and, potentially, leave there for future use.  I knew we needed a stove, so I grabbed my spare JetBoil and packed it.  I also grabbed a small, unused tent from the bottom shelf and tossed it in the box with some other assorted items (including her new backpack and hydration system).

This is where the problems started (entirely MY fault).  I don’t know where this tent came from.  It has been sitting on the bottom shelf of my gear storage for years.  I’m not even exactly sure how long it’s been there.  I figured this made it the perfect candidate for a take-and-leave tent for a simple beach camping trip.  Also, for some reason, I never opened up my JetBoil before packing it.  I’m not sure what I was thinking.

The plan was to bring some basics out to the beach, build a fire and cook a nice dinner.  We were looking forward to enjoying a beautiful quiet sunset together and an evening under a big Texas night sky.  We would spend our Valentine’s Trip comfortably curled up together near the fire enjoying a quiet night alone.

The plan began unraveling early when I realized the JetBoil I brought was just the container…no stove.  And, apparently, you can’t buy  ”just the stove” part of a JetBoil from retailers.  So our pre-trip trip to REI ended with us buying the Pocket Stove and a Kettle so we could actually have hot water.  Further complicating things is that neither one of us had a sleeping bag.  I didn’t bring one because I had expected she would have one we could share as a blanket.  Instead, we had to pack a bunch of blankets in hopes that it wouldn’t get too cold.  We still pushed forward with our plan, we made some food, brought some basic supplies and packed the car for an overnight trip.  Even with these stumbling blocks, we were still excited.

Merelyn on the beach...We got a late start the morning we left.  REI took longer than expected which pushed us even later.  Then traffic was stalled on the freeway due to a semi-truck getting itself wedged into the overpass (seriously, he was pinned between the upper and lower decks of the interchange!).  By the time we got to Galveston we were starving.  It was the weekend before Mardi-Gras and Galveston was buzzing with festivities.  Finding lunch and getting through Galveston took longer than expected and by the time we got to a piece of beach we could camp on it was almost sunset.

Not only was darkness approaching fast but it was windy…..damn windy.  Stupid windy.  Let’s-go-home-because-this-is-going-to-suck windy.

Pushing headlong into disaster, we found a place to park (you can drive and park on the beaches in Texas….weird), unpacked our stuff and as Merelyn bundled up and set off to capture some last minute pictures of the sunset I set to work building a fire.  Then we set up the tent…

“Why is it so small?  Are we both supposed to fit in that?”

WTF is this??  What the hell kind of second-rate, miniature, child-sized tent did I bring?  This was supposed to be a 3-person tent!  But unless your names were Grumpy, Dopey and Doc there was no way you’re squeezing 3 people into that tiny bubble of a tent!

“Is the air mattress even going to fit in that?”

Nope.  There’s no way in HELL the queen sized, inflatable mattress we brought is going to fit in that.  But I guess that won’t matter much since we also never charged the pump to blow up the air mattress!  So even when we crammed it into the tent, it got about half-full before the pump gave out.

We did our best with it though.  As I worked on building a solid fire, dug into the sand with a high wind-break around it, Merelyn built us a nest in the tiny little Hobbit-tent.  We folded the air mattress over on itself so even half-full it still gave us some cushion.  We piled sheets, blankets and extra clothing on top to give us as much insulation as we could muster.  Then we unpacked our food and cooked dinner as we sat in front of the fire.

Even with all our challenges, we were still in pretty good spirits and taking it all in good humor.  We had a fantastic dinner of fire-roasted vegetables and grilled-cheese sandwiches (see the post about the cooking iron).  Even as the wind picked up we ate, drank, laughed and had a great time together.

That night turned out to be a record mid-February low for Galveston.  Winds gusted up to 50 MPH.  Even using the car as a wind-break we still felt our miniscule shelter being buffeted about by the howling winds.  We slept off-and-on finding it difficult to get any real sleep in the wind and the cold.

But all of it – the record cold, the lack of blankets, the under-filled mattress, the ridiculously inadequate square-footage of the tent - in the end, added up to this: I got to spend my Valentine’s Trip outdoors, with my Dream Girl curled up in my arms next to me.  That (and some fantastic grilled-cheese) made this an amazing trip I will always remember.

Gear Review: Point6 Wool Socks…

Point6 Merino Wool Socks

SockOff2011 kicks off with an up-close and personal look at the Point6 Hiking Tech 100% Merino Wool Sock!  I tested my Point6′s in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve on a 9+ mile round trip hike to Thompson Peak.  This hike took me through mostly loose, rocky terrain littered with cacti, dry brush and sharp rock.  The socks took the abuse better than I did…

Point6 Price and availability

Point6 Merino Wool SocksThe entire line of Point6 socks have a very competitive price point compared to the rest of the market.  The hiking tech medium mini crew  is priced at $17.95 which is right in the middle of the $16-$20 range for most wool/wool-blend hiking socks.  Point6 socks are not widely available as of yet (though they seem to be expanding their market).  I was not able to find any retail locations in the Phoenix area and only two or three locations in the Houston area that carried the product.  Even the places in Houston I found that carried Point6 socks, only had two or three options in the store.  However, Point6 has a fantastic website and makes shopping for the right sock and ordering the sock extremely easy.  Order processing and shipping is very fast.

Point6 Comfort and Fit

As soon as my Point6 socks showed up in the mail, I put them on.  The fit is amazing and they are extremely comfortable to wear.  The toe doesn’t twist or bunch, the heal drops right in place and the top fits snug and secure.  I have tried a lot of different socks and the wool socks are not as soft, typically, as the wool-blends but these wool socks were not rough or abrasive (as most people expect from 100% wool products).

Point6 Padding and Support

Point6 has a very comprehensive padding and support system designed into their socks.  From the ultra-smooth toe seem to the arch support to the ankle bracing, these socks fit the bill for versatile, supportive sock structure.  I have very high arches and some chronic ankle problems so finding a sock that can support my foot usually means looking for a very technically designed sock.  My new Point6′s seemed to provide support in all the right places and padding where I needed it.  I don’t look for a ton of padding from my socks (I expect my insoles to do their work).  The “sport-specific” cushioning in these socks did it’s job.

Point6 Durability

Point6 Merino Wool SocksWe really didn’t test these socks long enough to judge durability properly, I will say this though: After one 9 mile hike in the dusty, rocky desert terrain I was in these socks looked exactly the same as they did when they arrived in the mail.  Amazingly, I was sweaty, dusty, dirty, scraped and sunburned and the socks were dry, clean and unaffected.

See durability follow up here.

Point6 Overall Performance on the trail

My overall impression of the 100% Merino Wool Point6 Hiking Tech socks is that they are great outdoor socks.  They provided me with everything I look for in a hard-use outdoor sock.  They are relatively lightweight, they seem (time will tell) very durable, the fit and function is flawless.  I would highly recommend these socks to anyone who is hard on their outdoor gear.

Don’t forget to visit Hiking the Trail and Diary of a Day hiker for their own comprehensive reviews of the Point6 hiking socks for SockOff2011!

Stay tuned for my next SockOff2011 review featuring the  Thorlo-CoolMax Synthetic trail running sock.
